One lane of Kaumuali`i Highway in Kipu open to alternating traffic following
fatal crash
KIPU — As of 9:15 a.m., police have opened one lane of Kaumuali`i Highway to
alternating traffic following a fatal crash that occurred shortly after 5 a.m. near Halfway Bridge in
Kipu.
According to a preliminary investigation, a Ford F150 pickup was heading west on
Kaumuali`i Highway when it apparently crossed the centerline and struck an oncoming Ford
F350 flatbed truck.
The driver of the F150, age 54 of Kalaheo, was transported by ambulance to Wilcox
Hospital where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been released.
The driver of the F350, a 32-year-old L5wa`i man, sustained non -life threatening injuries
and was transported to Wilcox Hospital via private vehicle.
Police remain at the scene to complete their on -scene investigation of the crash. It is not
yet known when both lanes of the highway will reopen. Motorists are still urged to avoid the area
if possible as severe traffic delays are expected.
