Firefighters respond to structure fire in Kalaheo
KALAHEO — Firefighters responded to a structure fire that broke out Thursday afternoon
along Kaumuali`i Highway in Kalaheo.
A female occupant who was home at the time was able to escape unharmed. She did
not report any injuries.
Firefighters from the Hanapepe, Kalaheo and LThu`e fire stations were dispatched to the
scene at approximately 1:45 p.m. Thursday, and found a two-story building fully engulfed in
heavy smoke and flames.
The fire was deemed under control and extinguished shortly after 2:45 p.m. However,
firefighters currently remain on scene to mop up and extinguish any hot spots.
During the incident, Kauai police closed Kaumuali`i Highway, between Kuli and Lauoho
roads, and assisted with traffic control. The portion of the highway remains closed at this time
and traffic is being diverted.
While the cost of damages are not yet known, the structure is considered a total loss.
Volunteers from the American Red Cross are assisting the displaced family of the home.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
