Collection drive for Aloha Libraries to kick off Jan. 12
LIHU`E — As part of the Corporation for National and Community Service's special
initiative for the Martin Luther King Day of Service, Senior Corps members of the Kaua'i Retired
and Senior Volunteer Program, RSVP Advisory Council, and members of Kauai Veterans
Council will be kicking off a collection drive starting Saturday, Jan. 12, with proceeds to be used
to construct Aloha Libraries.
These Aloha libraries will be placed islandwide in hopes of inspiring keiki to read,
encourage literacy in families, and foster a sense of community. Installation for the first library is
tentatively set for Saturday, Jan. 26.
There will be two Saturday collection days on Jan. 12 and Jan. 19 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
at both Kukui Grove Times Supermarket and Safeway in Llhu`e.
Additionally, donations may be dropped off or mailed to Kaua'i RSVP — Agency on
Elderly Affairs during normal business hours at 4444 Rice Street, Suite 330, in Lllu`e,
Aloha Libraries will be constructed through efforts of volunteers from Kaua'i Veterans
Council. Materials for the very first library were donated and constructed by RSVP Volunteer
and veteran Jim Jung.
Kauai RSVP is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, the
federal agency for volunteering, service, and civic engagement and is sponsored by the County
of Kaua`i's Agency on Elderly Affairs.
