CONTRADES, ACTING CHIEF Tel (808) 241-1600 Fax (808) 241-1604 Fatal crash closes Kaumuali`i Highway on Wednesday KALAHEO — A portion of Kaumuali`i Highway in Kalaheo was closed in both directions for several hours Wednesday, following a single -vehicle crash that resulted in the death of a 63- year-old Lawa`i man. The man's identity has not yet been released. According to a preliminary investigation, the man was heading east in a Toyota pickup truck on Kaumuali`i Highway shortly before 11 a.m., when he apparently drifted off the roadway and struck a utility pole. Bystanders near the scene found the man unresponsive and began administering CPR. Kalaheo firefighters and medics arrived shortly after and continued resuscitation efforts while the man was transported to Wilcox Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Kauai police closed Kaumuali`i Highway in Kalaheo, between Hokua and Papalina roads, for nearly three hours while officials conducted an on -scene investigation and worked to clear the road. Motorists were diverted through Hokua and Papalina roads until the highway was reopened at approximately 1:35 p.m. Representatives from Hawaiian Telcom remained on scene to repair the damaged utility pole along the highway. The investigation of the crash remains ongoing.
