Fatal crash closes Kaumuali`i Highway on Wednesday
KALAHEO — A portion of Kaumuali`i Highway in Kalaheo was closed in both directions
for several hours Wednesday, following a single -vehicle crash that resulted in the death of a 63-
year-old Lawa`i man.
The man's identity has not yet been released.
According to a preliminary investigation, the man was heading east in a Toyota pickup
truck on Kaumuali`i Highway shortly before 11 a.m., when he apparently drifted off the roadway
and struck a utility pole.
Bystanders near the scene found the man unresponsive and began administering CPR.
Kalaheo firefighters and medics arrived shortly after and continued resuscitation efforts while
the man was transported to Wilcox Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Kauai police closed Kaumuali`i Highway in Kalaheo, between Hokua and Papalina
roads, for nearly three hours while officials conducted an on -scene investigation and worked to
clear the road. Motorists were diverted through Hokua and Papalina roads until the highway was
reopened at approximately 1:35 p.m.
Representatives from Hawaiian Telcom remained on scene to repair the damaged utility
pole along the highway.
