"We are cognizant and sympathetic to the many hard working men and women who are dedicated to our country, who report to duty even in the face of a government shutdown," said Mayor Derek S. K. Kawakami. "We cannot imagine the anxiety that you must be facing, trying to figure out how to make ends meet. Solutions to reopening the government at this time still appear temporary, and we will be monitoring the situation in Washington as the days unfold. We hope our Federal leaders can come to a more permanent solution to keep our government predictably open." Impacted Federal workers who may be unable to make their Real Property Tax payment by Feb. 20 will have until May 20 to pay their second installment of real property taxes without a fee. Additionally, impacted Federal workers who are not able to make timely payments on Department of Water bills will not be subject to the 0.5 percent late payment fee for the duration of the shutdown. Any late payments prior to the recent Government shutdown will not qualify for this extension. For more information on the Department of Water billing services and fee waiver for shutdown -impacted federal workers, please contact the Department of Water at 245-5442. Motor vehicle registration payments are also extended 90 days from their original deadlines for shutdown -impacted Federal workers. In order to verify eligibility, Federal workers are required to have the following: • A Federal I.D. • A registration address and/or • A utility bill or other mail showing your name and eligible address. "We want to thank Council Chair Arryl Kaneshiro and the County Council for helping to work with us on this matter. We also want to thank Sen. Brian Schatz and our Congressional delegation for sharing the experiences that our impacted Federal workers have been faced with over the last 35 days," Added Mayor Kawakami. "We hope that this brings some relief to the anxieties that these brave workers face. We pray that some resolution will come to fruition soon, and we want to thank our impacted Federal workers for their dedication to the important work that they do and for their unwavering service to our Country." Real Property tax payments can be made online at https://kauairpt.ehawaii.gov, by mail, in person, or at a drop box located outside the Kapule Building at the Lihu`e Civic Center. Please make checks payable to the Director of Finance. Property tax bills were recently mailed to all owners on record or their respective mortgage institutions for those with impound accounts. Property owners who pay their real property taxes directly and have not yet received their property tax bills should inquire at the Real Property Tax Collection office at the Lihu`e Civic Center, Kapule Building, 4444 Rice Street, Suite 463, or call 241-4272. Failure to pay real property taxes by the due date, for non-federal employees, will result in a 10 percent penalty, as well as 12 percent interest per year.
