Male visitor dies in waters off Kauapea Beach
KILAUEA — Kaua'i police report that a male visitor died in waters off Kauapea Beach, in
Kilauea, Wednesday afternoon.
He has been identified as 31-year-old Jonathan Seim of Washington.
Shortly before 2:30 p.m., Seim went swimming in waters off Kauapea Beach, also known
as Secret Beach, when he became distressed and yelled out for help. Bystanders entered the
water and found him face down roughly 20 feet from the shoreline. They brought the
unresponsive man to shore and began administering CPR.
Hanalei firefighters, lifeguards from the North Roving Patrol Unit, and medics were
dispatched to the scene and took over resuscitation efforts, but the man could not be revived.
Seim was transported to Mahelona Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy is pending to determine the cause of his death, but foul play is not
suspected.
Volunteers with Life's Bridges, a grief counseling service, assisted the man's family.
