DAHILIG, MANAGING DIRECTOR os News Release For Immediate Release: February 25, 2019 DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS LYLE TABATA, DEPUTY COUNTY ENGINEER Tel (808) 241-4992 Fax (808) 241-6604 Second phase of construction for Li-hu`e Town Core Mobility and Revitalization project to begin March 4 through June LIHU`E — The Department of Public Works and Kiewit Infrastructure West Co. are announcing that construction for the second phase of the Lliu`e Town Core Mobility and Revitalization project will begin on March 4, on weekdays, from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m, through June, weather pending. Additionally, the first phase of construction continues for the Civic Center to Convention Hall shared use path. The scope of work for the second phase of construction will consist of road, sidewalk, and parking construction activities on Eiwa Street and Umi Street, as well as pavement work of the Pi`ikoi parking lot at the L-ihu`e Civic Center. Dates of construction for this phase of the project are as follows, weather pending: • Eiwa Street/Pi'ikoi Parking Lot Phase 1: March 4 to April 9, 2019 • Umi Street Sidewalk: March 11 to April 9, 2019 Pi`ikoi Parking Lot Phase 2: April 10 to May 23, 2019 • Pi`ikoi Parking Lot mill and pavement overlay: Mid -June of 2019 Eiwa Street pavement reconstruction: May 16 to the end of June 2019 Motorists are encouraged to allow for extra travel time when driving near the work areas and to observe and follow all construction traffic controls. Please exercise caution when commuting through the work areas. This project is mostly funded from the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) program. In 2015, the County of Kauai was awarded this $15.1 million TIGER grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The county is funding an additional $2 million for the project. TIGER grants are targeted investments for local communities that increase safety, create jobs, and modernize the country's infrastructure. The Llhu`e Town Core Mobility and Revitalization project includes streetscape improvements, development of a transit hub, new and expanded sidewalks, a shared -use path, improved bus stops and bike facilities, safer pedestrian crossings, and dedicated on -street parking.
