CONTRADES, ACTING CHIEF Tel (808) 241-1600 Fax (808) 241-1604 Hit-and-run results in pedestrian fatality; suspect arrested KOLOA — Police have arrested the driver believed to be involved in a hit-and-run crash that occurred early Friday morning in Koloa, which resulted in the death of a pedestrian. Police have identified the pedestrian as 31-year-old Lenson Perez of Kauai. Perez had no known address at the time of his death. At approximately 5:30 a.m., police were called to Ala Kinoiki Road, in the area south of Kauai Christian Fellowship church, for a report of an unresponsive man in the middle of the road. A preliminary investigation revealed that Perez was skateboarding on the southbound lane of Ala Kinoiki Road when he was struck by a pickup truck. The driver of the truck did not stop to render aid. Shortly after, the man was struck a second time by a second southbound pickup truck. The driver of that truck stopped to render aid and waited for police and first responders to arrive. Perez was transported to Wilcox Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police closed Ala Kinoiki Road in both directions at approximately 5:45 a.m., and initiated a search for the first involved driver. A preliminary investigation led officers to arrest Michael Fostanes, age 54 of 'Ele'ele, for suspicion of Negligent Homicide in the Second Degree and Accidents Involving Serious Bodily Injury or Death. He has since been released pending further investigation. An autopsy is pending. Ala Kinoiki Road was reopened at about 10:45 a.m., after KPD's Traffic Safety Section completed its on -scene investigation. The investigation remains ongoing at this time.
