Kahiliholo Road to reopen Monday evening; bypass to close on Tuesday at
5 p.m.
Due to the completion of electrical repairs by KIUC, County of Kauai officials are
announcing that Kahiliholo Road can begin accommodating traffic sometime this evening, with
the road operational by tomorrow morning.
Kuawa Road, which was used as a temporary bypass road while Kahiliholo Road was
under repair, will also remain open as Kahiliholo Road is reopened. Once the transition is
complete, the temporary bypass road will close Tuesday, March 5, at 5 p.m.
"Mahalo to the members of the Kalihiwai Ridge Association, and the residents of the
area for your patience as repairs to the road are completed and the road is now reopen," said
Mayor Derek S. K. Kawakami. "We also thank private landowners Common Ground and Wai
Koa Plantation for their generosity in providing this critical access to our upper Kalihiwai and
Namahana Farms residents in their time of need."
The scope of the work included the installation of a concrete box culvert at a stream
crossing of Kahiliholo Road, to replace a corrugated metal pipe that was washed away during
the record -breaking flood. The work also included replacement of the roadway embankment and
pavement within the area of the culvert. Drivers should be advised continued construction in the
area will continue, and expect slow driving speeds as contractors install guardrails and do
additional repaving.
On June 25, 2018, representatives with the Federal Emergency Management Agency
inspected the damaged section of Kahiliholo Road and later approved it for FEMA Public
Assistance, which would made it eligible for 75 percent reimbursement.
