DAHILIG, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF News Release For Immediate Release: March 4, 2019 DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS LYLE TABATA, DEPUTY COUNTY ENGINEER Tel (808) 241-4992 Fax (808) 241-6604 Kahiliholo Road to reopen Monday evening; bypass to close on Tuesday at 5 p.m. Due to the completion of electrical repairs by KIUC, County of Kauai officials are announcing that Kahiliholo Road can begin accommodating traffic sometime this evening, with the road operational by tomorrow morning. Kuawa Road, which was used as a temporary bypass road while Kahiliholo Road was under repair, will also remain open as Kahiliholo Road is reopened. Once the transition is complete, the temporary bypass road will close Tuesday, March 5, at 5 p.m. "Mahalo to the members of the Kalihiwai Ridge Association, and the residents of the area for your patience as repairs to the road are completed and the road is now reopen," said Mayor Derek S. K. Kawakami. "We also thank private landowners Common Ground and Wai Koa Plantation for their generosity in providing this critical access to our upper Kalihiwai and Namahana Farms residents in their time of need." The scope of the work included the installation of a concrete box culvert at a stream crossing of Kahiliholo Road, to replace a corrugated metal pipe that was washed away during the record -breaking flood. The work also included replacement of the roadway embankment and pavement within the area of the culvert. Drivers should be advised continued construction in the area will continue, and expect slow driving speeds as contractors install guardrails and do additional repaving. On June 25, 2018, representatives with the Federal Emergency Management Agency inspected the damaged section of Kahiliholo Road and later approved it for FEMA Public Assistance, which would made it eligible for 75 percent reimbursement.
