Visitor dies after snorkeling in waters off Pine Trees
HANALEI — A 20-year-old male visitor has died after he became distressed while
snorkeling in waters off Waioli Beach Park, also known as Pine Trees, in Hanalei on Thursday.
His identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Shortly before 11:30 a.m., first responders were notified of the distressed snorkeler.
Responding lifeguards found the man unresponsive in the water, and brought him to
shore where they began administering CPR. Hanalei firefighters arrived on scene and continued
resuscitation efforts. Additionally, a visiting doctor who was at the beach during the time of the
incident also provided assistance.
AMR medics arrived to the scene and provided advanced life support. The man regained
a pulse while in transport to Wilcox Hospital. However, he remained at the hospital in critical
condition, and later died from his injuries Thursday night.
An autopsy is pending.
