Man found dead off Waimea cliff
WAIMEA — Kaua'i police are investigating an unattended death after a man was found
dead on the cliffside of Waimea Canyon Drive Tuesday afternoon.
At approximately 6 p.m. on Tuesday, police were called to Waimea Canyon Drive, in the
vicinity of mile marker 5.5, where a bystander who was scouting the area for goats observed a
body about 200 feet below the cliff.
Due to the dangerous terrain and pending nightfall, emergency personnel were unable to
gain access to the area that day.
On Wednesday morning, personnel from the Kauai Fire Department and Kauai Police
Department began a body recovery operation. At approximately 12:15 p.m., firefighters from the
Waimea fire station, Rescue 3 personnel, and the on -duty Battalion Chief, initiated a high -angle
rope rescue system. Rescuers recovered the man's body at approximately 4 p.m., and with
assistance from Air 1, his body was short -hauled to a nearby landing zone.
An autopsy is being scheduled to identify the man and determine the cause of his death.
The incident remains under police investigation.
Anyone with information on the man's identity or this incident is urged to call Assistant
Chief of the Investigative Services Bureau Bryson Ponce at 241-1681 or Police Dispatch at 241-
