Prison sentence for Kapa`a man in child porn case
LIHU`E — Ruben Kamanawa Santos, 54, formerly of Kapa`a, was sentenced to serve five
years in prison for having photos of a nude minor on his cell phone. Fifth Circuit Judge Kathleen
N.A. Watanabe handed down the sentence on Thursday.
Police executed a search warrant on Santos's phone and recovered the images after an
acquaintance discovered them. Prosecutors recommended the prison term following Santos's
plea to a charge of Promoting Child Abuse in the Third Degree, which is a class C felony.
The case was prosecuted by Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Keola Siu. The lead
investigator on the case was Detective Chad Cataluna of KPD's Internet Crimes Against
Children Unit.
Prosecuting Attorney Justin F. Kollar stated, "We are grateful for Detective Cataluna and
DPA Siu's hard work in bringing this case to a successful result. Thanks to their efforts, this
predator will spend a significant amount of time in prison and the victim in this case will be
spared from the trauma of a trial."
