Pilot program preventing vandalism at comfort stations to
commence May 25
LIHU`E — In an effort to curb illegal activities in public restrooms, the Department of
Parks and Recreation will commence a pilot program starting May 25 to close comfort stations
nightly at Kealia Kai, Kealia Beach, and the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex from 10 p.m. to 6
a.m.
"This pilot program will help us to eliminate continued acts of vandalism and other illegal
activities that have been occurring at our park comfort stations, particularly during overnight
hours," said Mayor Derek S. K. Kawakami. "Preventing damage to our comfort stations ensures
that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy our parks, and ultimately lessons the burden on our
taxpayers."
The Lihi Park comfort station is currently closed due to septic system repairs. Once it is
operational, it will be added to the closure list.
In 2018, there were 71 reported cases of vandalism — which included broken fixtures,
damage to doors and walls, foreign objects in plumbing lines, and graffiti — in comfort stations at
Kealia Kai, Kealia Beach, the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex, and Lihi Park.
To report suspicious activity, please call Police Dispatch at 241-1711.
