Firefighters respond to brush fires near Burns Field
HANAPEPE — Firefighters responded to two brush fires that broke out along the makai
side of the Port Allen Airport, also known as Burns Field, in Hanapepe, Tuesday afternoon.
No injuries or structural damage were reported.
At approximately 4:15 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to a report of two separate
brush fires near Burns Field. Hanapepe firefighters were first on scene and found an area near
Hanapepe Bay, approximately 30 feet by 40 feet, actively burning. The second fire was smaller
in size and burning slowly near the west end of the airstrip.
Firefighters established an attack line on the larger fire and quickly brought the head of
the fire under control. Kalaheo firefighters arrived on scene and joined the effort, initiating fire
suppression on the second blaze.
Both fires were fully extinguished, and the scene was cleared at approximately 5:40 p.m.
The cause of the fires have not yet been determined.
