Sewer system smoke testing to be performed
in Hanama`ulu and Wailua next week
HANAMA`ULU and WAILUA — The public is advised that the Wastewater Management
Division will perform additional smoke testing on its Hanama`ulu sewer collection system next
week. This is a follow up to the smoke testing that was performed in July 2018. Additionally,
smoke testing will be performed in Wailua.
Smoke testing will be performed from June 5 to 7, from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The streets
that will be smoke tested include Hanama`ulu Road, between Kuhio Highway and Anai Street,
and Papaloa Road, between the north and south intersections with Kuhio Highway.
Smoke testing uses a non -toxic smoke and is helpful in identifying areas where
infiltration/inflow (storm water entering the sewer main) is occurring. The tests will consist of
approximately 20 minutes of work at each manhole in the area.
Traffic control, using flaggers, will be implemented in the work areas.
Motorists should drive with caution, expect delays and adjust their travel times as
needed.
