DAHILIG, MANAGING DIRECTOR C OF News Release For Immediate Release: May 31, 2019 DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS LYLE TABATA, DEPUTY COUNTY ENGINEER Tel (808) 241-4992 Fax (808) 241-6604 County of Kauai and the State Department of Health announce winners of the School Electronic Waste Recycling Contest The County of Kauai Department of Public Works Solid Waste Division in partnership with the State Department of Health Solid and Hazardous Waste Branch would like to congratulate all the schools that participated in the inaugural School Electronic Waste (eWaste) Recycling Contest which ran during the month of April. Mrs. Jana Miyazaki and Ms. Alisha Siliado's second grade classes at `Ele`ele Elementary School and Mr. Joel Kawate's fourth grade class from Kalaheo Elementary School won an end -of -the -year pizza party with student participants from these classes, receiving Jamba Juice gift cards. Courtney Faria, a second grader from Mrs. Miyazaki's class was this year's top recycler, turning in 187 total pieces of eWaste for recycling. Tavesi Harris of Mrs. Lisa Yamagata and Mrs. Diane Foulks's Climate Action class at Waimea Canyon Middle School is recognized as the top student in the middle school age group. Both students received special certificates signed by Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami along with gift cards from Pizza Hut. The certificates were presented by Recycling Program Coordinator Keola Aki, thanking the students for their outstanding community service. Mahalo to all the schools that participated and Mrs. Malie Smith for her work organizing Kalaheo school's recycling efforts this year, as well as the continued service of Resource Recovery Solutions operating out of the Puhi Metals Recycling facility for facilitating all the eWaste recycling for the island of Kauai. The County Solid Waste Division looks forward to expanding the contest next year to include on -campus recycling for schools wishing to hold a school -wide recycling drive.
