Three -vehicle crash closes portion of Kaumuali`i Highway on Sunday
A portion Kaumuali`i Highway in the vicinity of Maluhia Road in Koloa was closed in both
directions for over an hour on Sunday, following a three -vehicle crash.
Four people sustained non -life -threatening injuries, and were treated by responding
medics while in transport to Wilcox Hospital.
Police responded to the incident at approximately 3:10 p.m. According to a preliminary
investigation, a NISSAN SUV traveling eastbound on Kaumuali`i Highway apparently lost
control, crossed the center line, and broadsided a westbound Toyota Tacoma. Because of the
initial collision, a westbound Chevy SUV rear ended the Toyota Tacoma.
Kauai Police closed a portion of Kaumuali`i Highway from approximately 3:30 to 4:45
p.m. to allow emergency personnel to rescue the drivers from their vehicles. Westbound traffic
was diverted onto Maluhia Road, while eastbound traffic was diverted onto Oma`o Road.
Heavy rain and inclement weather appear to have been factors in the crash. Alcohol
does not appear to be a factor.
