DAHILIG, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF News Release For Immediate Release: August 8, 2019 DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS LYLE TABATA, DEPUTY COUNTY ENGINEER Tel (808) 241-4992 Fax (808) 241-6604 Public reminded to properly dispose of used fats, oils, and grease The Wastewater Management Division is reminding the public to properly dispose their used fats, oils, and grease (FOG). Food service establishments must secure professional services to maintain and pump cooking oil from grease traps. Please contact Kauai Grease Trap at 337-9272 or 634-7232 or email kauaigrease@aol.com for quotes and information. Used cooking oil from residents can be disposed by absorbing the oil into old rags, newspaper, or other absorbent material, and be discarded in the trash. If residents have large amounts of cooking oil, they may be able to collaborate with a local restaurant. Most restaurants have grease bins whose contents are recycled. "Disposing these materials down your drain hardens and causes blockages with plumbing lines," said Deputy County Engineer Lyle Tabata. "Additionally, accumulation of FOG may cause blockages in the County's sewer collection system, which result in raw wastewater spills that affect the public's health and safety and the environment." Per the County code it is illegal to discharge 100 parts per million (i.e. 100 parts oil to 1,000,000 parts water). Since this concentration is hard to quantify without testing, it is recommended that every effort be made to prevent FOG from entering the County's sewer collection system. Violating the County code can lead to fines and/or jail.
