Firefighters extinguish 25-acre brush fire in Anahola
ANAHOLA — Kaua`i firefighters extinguished a brush fire that broke out in Anahola late
Sunday evening.
No injuries were reported and no homes were threatened despite the fire's close
proximity to a subdivision owned by the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands.
At approximately 11:36 p.m. on Sunday, personnel from the Kaiakea and Kapa`a fire
stations were dispatched to a brush fire along Kukuihale Road, between Pilipoli Road and
Anahola Road. Due to high winds and rapid fire spread, firefighters from the Hanalei, Lihu`e and
Koloa stations soon joined the effort. A crew from the Department of Public Works also assisted
with two water trucks and a bulldozer.
Crews were able to bring the fire under control and prevent it from spreading up Pilipoli
Road towards the residential neighborhood. However, during their response firefighters located
a large pile of abandoned mixed waste, such as vehicles, appliances and other items, which
made it difficult to fully extinguish the blaze.
The excavator was used to gain access to the fire which had burned roughly 25 acres of
heavy brush and grass. Personnel fully extinguished all flames and cleared the scene shortly
before 5 a.m. Monday.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
