Employees of the Month recognized at Police Commission Meeting
LIHUE — The Kauai Police Department (KPD) recognized 10 employees during
August's Police Commission meeting held on Aug. 30, at the Pi'ikoi Building.
The following Patrol Services Bureau officers were honored as KPD's Employees of the
Month: Sergeant Kenneth Carvalho, Officer Johnathan Anderson, Officer James Gause Jr.,
Officer Matthew Kaluahine, Officer Kalama Lingaton, Officer Blake Moura, Officer Rolland
Peahu Jr., Officer Isaiah Sarsona, Officer Jason Scalzo, and Officer Clayton Silva Jr.
During the month of June, these officers conducted patrols of Ke Ala Hele Makalae — the
multi -use path in Kapa`a — in preparation for the annual Mayor-a-thon. While conducting patrols
of the area, they observed large pieces of trash and tires left on the ground. Officer Scalzo in
particular took the first initiative to begin removing the trash, with the support of Sgt. Carvalho
and the district officers on duty.
Since June, all of the 10 patrol officers have contributed significantly to the safety and
beautification of the Kapa`a path through regular patrols of the area.
"Words are hard to describe just how much these officers have done to improve the
conditions of the Kapa`a multi -use path," said Chief of Police Todd Raybuck. "They saw a need
and stepped above and beyond their call of duty to meet that need, and it has made a big
difference in our community. The public rarely gets to see the great things that police officers do
and the sacrifices that they make. So today I am proud to honor these 10 outstanding men for
their efforts to make this community a better place for us all."
During the ceremony, the officers were also recognized by Mayor Derek S. K. Kawakami
for their efforts and increased presence along the Kapa`a path, which has shown a significant
decrease in criminal activity.
"Our office would often receive calls from people who didn't feel safe in a place that was
built for families to enjoy," said Mayor Kawakami. "We thank these officers for taking this
initiative and dedicating their time and service to meet the requests and needs of our
community. Because of their continuous patrols and efforts, Ke Ala Hele Makalae is a safer
place for us all to enjoy on a daily basis."
Chief Raybuck and the Police Commission presented each officer with a special lei,
certificate, and Chief's coin at Friday's ceremony. Mayor Kawakami also presented the officers
with a certificate of appreciation.
