LIHU`E — The County of Kauai Planning Department is reminding the public that
operating a transient vacation rental (TVR) without the legal right is punishable by up to $10,000
per day.
"We have received complaints from property owners and landlords of solicitation letters
from third party companies advising them to convert their long-term residential rentals into short-
term transient vacation rentals," said Director of the Department of Planning Ka`aina S. Hull. "If
you are not in the Visitor Destination Area (VDA) or hold a non -conforming use certificate to
operate a vacation rental outside of the VDA, you are prohibited from operating a TVR. Any
violation of this prohibition is subject to heavy, daily fines."

Ordinances 1002, 904, and 950.
If you are a property owner or landlord and have received a solicitation letter, please

much information as possible.
