DOW hands-out over 500 water education kits in honor of IADWW
LIHUE– Families, teachers and tutus came to the Department of Water’s (DOW) free drive-thru, water
education activity kit pick-up on Tuesday, October 6th at the Vidinha Stadium parking lot. Approximately
520 activity kits were handed-out via contactless distribution to the community as part of the DOW’s efforts
to honor national Imagine a Day Without Water (IADWW) awareness day.
“This year’s public health crisis showed us the critical importance of water service to safeguard public
health and the economy. More importantly, it highlights the valuable water infrastructure and service it
takes to deliver water to homes, healthcare centers and businesses,” said Kurt Akamine, Kaua`i Board of
Water Supply. “The Imagine a Day Without Water campaign is an important reminder of the value,
investment and advocacy that the both the Board of Water Supply and the Department of Water maintains
while servicing our customers.”
In addition to the water education kit distribution, DOW is also hosting a special Facebook campaign from
October 1-21; featuring educational IADWW related posts and a Value Water Challenge. Water users are
invited to take the Value Water Challenge on Facebook by sharing a video or written post, answering the
question: Why is water important to you? Participants should include the hash tags #ValueWaterKauai and
#IADWWKauai on their post for a chance to be seen and featured on the DOW’s Facebook page at
www.facebook.com/KauaiDOW.
“We are excited to feature residents and businesses via the DOW’s Facebook page, which has been an
important part of our informative outreach efforts,” said Jonell Kaohelaulii, DOW’s Information and
Education Specialist. “Anyone can host their own value water challenge at home, simply by discussing how
water is used and implementing ways to conserve water.”
Imagine a Day Without Water is celebrated nationally on October 21st and is led by the Value Water
Campaign, as an opportunity for diverse organizations, from environmental advocates to coffee shops,
developers to farmers, local fishermen to public water utilities, to talk about what and why water is
important to them. This year, DOW joins a statewide team of IADWW participants including: Honolulu
Board of Water Supply, County of Maui Department of Water Supply, City & County of Honolulu Storm
Water Branch, Commission on Water Resources and more. Learn more at
