Kawakami has signed Bill No. 2775, restricting the use and sale of polystyrene foam food service containers, today, Sept. 15. The bill, introduced by Councilmembers Mason Chock and KipuKai Kuali‘i, was passed after a 4-2 vote at Council chambers on Wednesday. “Mahalo to the Kaua‘i County Council for passing this bill that will help to lessen the impact of waste on our island – both on land and in the ocean,” said Mayor Derek S. K. Kawakami. “Restricting these types of containers will further public health and encourage the use of environmentally-safe products.” The ordinance to restrict of the use and sale of polystyrene foam food service containers will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2022.
