BLANE, CHIEF OF STAFF (808) 241-4900 Hawai‘i State Department of Health Kaua‘i District Health Office announces one case of COVID-19 on May 3 LĪHU‘E – The Hawai‘i State Department of Health Kaua‘i District Health Office reported one new case of COVID-19 on Monday, May 3. Today’s case is an adult female resident whose source of infection is considered community- acquired. Her infection has been tied to known places of disease transmission on Kaua‘i. All active cases are in isolation, and close contacts are being identified, offered testing, and directed to quarantine. Investigations are ongoing. “One of the cases reported yesterday was in an employee at Kaua‘i Community Correctional whose source of infection was outside of the workplace,” said Dr. Janet Berreman, Kaua‘i District Health Officer. “However, due to the risk of an outbreak in that setting, the Kaua‘i District Health Office and the Department of Public Safety mobilized a team to test everyone on-site at the facility today. We will take every action we can to prevent an outbreak in that setting.” Today’s case brings the number of active cases to 73, with 326 cumulative cases. Kaua‘i’s cumulative case count includes 289 confirmed locally, two probable, and 35 positive cases diagnosed elsewhere, as they received their pre-travel test results after arriving on island. Free testing at the Convention Hall is available Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Upon arrival at the test center, you will receive an appointment time to return later in the day. Appointments are given on a first-come, first-served basis. There is a maximum of 400 appointments a day. Testing is also available through your primary care physician, a hospital, or an urgent care clinic. Please contact those providers directly for more information. If you have symptoms or are feeling sick, you should isolate yourself immediately, stay away from household members, and not go out – including to work or school – unless you are seeking testing or getting health care. Those who have been vaccinated should still be tested if they believe they may have been exposed or if they feel sick. Vaccination is free and widely available on the island, including on weekends and evenings. For details, visit www.kauai.gov/vaccine. Those who plan to travel can protect themselves and their families by being fully vaccinated before traveling. For more information on the county’s COVID-19 response, visit www.kauai.gov/COVID-19.
