Salt Pond Beach Park closed for maintenance, repairs through July 9
Permitted recreational camping anticipated to open late July
HANAPĒPĒ – Salt Pond Beach Park will be closed to the public through Friday, July 9, to allow the
Department of Parks and Recreation to conduct initial site cleanup, grounds maintenance, and facility
repairs in the area. The park is scheduled to reopen for day use only on Saturday, July 10.
Camping at Salt Pond Beach Park will remain closed until further notice. While officials
anticipate recreational camping will reopen to the public in late July, updates will be announced when a
firm date is known.
Officials will continue site cleanup, grounds maintenance, and facility repairs during the current
transition period. Areas of the park will be roped off for public safety and considered a construction
zone while officials work to prepare the park for the reinstatement of recreational use.
The Ocean Safety Bureau’s lifeguard tower will continue to be manned during the park closure.
When Salt Pond Beach Park reopens to camping, only individuals with recreational permits from
the county’s Department of Parks and Recreation, as described in Chapter 19 of the Kaua‘i County Code,
will be allowed to camp at the site. Camping permit applications for Salt Pond are not being accepted at
this time; however, more details will be announced prior to the park reopening.
Salt Pond Beach Park was the county’s last of five parks which closed its temporary ‘Shelter in
Place’ camping permit program. The program was originally established at the start of the pandemic in
Spring 2020, when the county closed recreational camping to avoid large gatherings and wide
community spread of COVID-19.
The county began to transition out of the Shelter in Place program in late March, and for
months has conducted continuous homeless outreach events across the island, along with daily
outreach efforts of various non-profit organizations to help connect individuals with available assistance
and on-island resources.
