REMINDER: Finance Department offers extended hours for expired credentials
through July 16
LĪHU‘E – The public is reminded that the Department of Finance Drivers Licensing division is
offering extended hours through Friday, July 16, to allow eligible customers to renew their driver’s
licenses, learner’s permits, and state identification cards that expired on or after March 16, 2020.
Only customers meeting these criteria may come to the Drivers Licensing division for service
between 4 p.m. and 4:45 p.m., during the effective dates. No appointments are necessary and
customers will be assisted on a first-come, first-served basis. To ensure service, it is recommended to
get in line early.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 emergency response, Gov. David Ige’s 21st proclamation has
extended the validity of all driver’s licenses, learner’s permits, and state identification cards for 60 days
beyond their expiration date. Those credentials with expiration dates between March 16, 2020, and
June 8, 2021, have been extended until August 6, 2021. It is anticipated that this will be the last
extension granted via emergency proclamations and after August 6, late penalties will be enforced.
“Our hope is that the extended hours will offer the extra boost needed to achieve our goal of
eliminating any pandemic-caused backlog and help to avoid incurring late penalties,” said Reiko
Matsuyama, Finance Director.
For appointments during regular business hours, please visit www.kauai.gov/DMV. Normal
hours of operation are from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., Monday through Friday, except for state and federal
holidays. Kupuna hour is also still available for those 65 years or older, from 8 to 8:45 a.m. No
appointments are necessary for Kupuna hour.
The Department of Motor Vehicles consists of the Drivers Licensing division and the Motor
Vehicle division. Extended service hours during the effective dates applies only to eligible customers in
the Drivers Licensing division. The Motor Vehicle division will not have extended service hours.
Masks are required for entry and service at the Department of Motor Vehicles, and social
distancing guidelines will continue to be enforced.
