First responders conduct multiple rescues on North Shore Saturday
First responders conducted multiple rescues on the North Shore on Saturday.
Firefighters were notified of the first report of an injured 30-year-old female visitor from New
York at Hanakāpī‘ai Falls at approximately 1 p.m.
According to a preliminary report, Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 arrived on scene at approximately 1:45
p.m. and communicated with bystanders who directed first responders to an area ¼ mile from the lower
Hanakāpī‘ai landing zone.
Two rescuers hiked towards Hanakāpī‘ai Falls to locate the injured hiker. First responders
located the hiker who sustained a serious knee injury. Before being secured and loaded upon Air 1, the
injured hiker informed first responders that she had a friend at Hanakāpī‘ai Beach who sustained an
ankle injury. First responders would later rescue the other hiker at Hanakāpī‘ai Beach.
The initial hiker was transported to Princeville Airport and was met by Hanalei firefighters and
American Medical Response. AMR provided medical assessments and treatment to the hiker and
transported her to a local hospital.
The scene was cleared at 3:40 p.m.
At approximately 3:40 p.m., after clearing the first incident, first responders received an EMS
call of an injured 42-year-old female visitor from Connecticut on the Secret Beach hiking trail in Kīlauea.
According to a preliminary report, firefighters from the Hanalei fire station located the hiker 100
yards from the beach upon arrival. The hiker had fallen on the trail and injured her right ankle.
First responders secured the hiker onto a stokes litter and transferred her to responding medics
with American Medical Response. AMR provided medical assessments and treatment to the hiker and
transported her to a local hospital.
The scene was cleared at approximately 4 p.m.
At approximately 4:10 p.m., first responders returned to the Hanakāpī‘ai area to rescue a 35-
year-old female on Hanakāpī‘ai Beach.
According to a preliminary report, at 4:30 p.m., Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 arrived at a landing zone
in the Hanakāpī‘ai area, recovered the patient, secured her on Air 1, and flew her to Princeville Airport.
Responding medics with American Medical Response provided medical assessments and treatment to
the hiker and transported her to a local hospital.
The scene was cleared at 5 p.m.
