Blessing held for Kawaihau-Hau‘a‘ala-Mailihuna Complete Streets Project; first phase
of construction to begin Oct. 11
KAPA‘A – About 20 people attended the blessing for the Kawaihau-Hau‘a‘ala-Mailihuna
Complete Streets Project in Kapa‘a on Friday.
“Mahalo to Grace Pacific, the Department of Public Works, and our community for helping to
make this project come to fruition,” said Mayor Derek S. K. Kawakami. “I have walked this area countless
times with my daughter Hailee when she attended Kapa‘a Elementary School. This improvement will
help to slow vehicles down, keep traffic flowing smoothly, avoid confusion amongst drivers, and will
increase the overall safety of this area.”
In addition to the 5-way intersection of Kawaihau Road, Hau‘a‘ala Road, and Mailihuna Road,
safety improvements include new concrete sidewalks fronting Kapa‘a Elementary School, Kapa‘a High
School and St. Catherine School, new bus shelters, and flashing beacons at crosswalks.
“There will be temporary inconveniences as is necessary when making improvements of this
magnitude, and we thank the community for your patience and understanding as our contractors get to
work,” added Mayor Kawakami.
Additionally, the Department of Public Works and Grace Pacific LLC., are announcing that the
first phase of construction for the Kawaihau-Hau`a`ala-Mailihuna Complete Streets Project is set to
begin on Oct. 11, 2021, from 7 a.m to 3:30 p.m.
The scope of work consists of grading, demo, installation of BMP’s, drain line, waterline, and
sidewalk construction in the vicinity of the Hau‘a‘ala Road, Kolohala Road, Mailihuna Road, and
Kawaihau Road intersections. This phase of the project is expected to be completed by Jan. 30, 2022.
Lane closures are scheduled for this phase of work on Mailihuna Road, and motorists are
