FIRE CAPTAIN

6.015
Commands and supervises a company of firefighting personnel on a regularly
assigned shift or supervises and/or performs work relating to the activities, functions, and
programs of a specialized division; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class is distinguished by its responsibility to command a company of firefighting
or rescue personnel on a regularly assigned shift or supervise and/or perform work relating to the activities, functions, and programs of a specialized division.
Examples of Duties: (The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily
descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does
not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical
assignment for the position).
•Responds to fire and emergency alarms (includes hazardous materials) and directs
subordinates in extinguishing fires, search and rescue work, hazardous materials
spills and protecting property;
•Assess conditions, lays out strategy and directs the placement of personnel and
equipment to effectively accomplish missions;
•Determines the need for additional support and calls for same;
•Remains in command until the fire, hazardous condition or emergency is over unless
relieved by a superior officer;
•Supervises and may personally administer aid to injured;
•Supervises salvage and cleanup work;
•Determines and reports cause of fire or hazardous material incident and estimated
damage;
•Supervises station activities including the maintenance and upkeep of facilities,
grounds and equipment;

and hazardous materials literatures; functions of other public safety agencies and their
activities.
Ability to:
Plan, lay out and supervise the work of others; instruct others in the use and care of
firefighting, lifesaving and hazardous materials equipment; organize and conduct drills and
training sessions; analyze firefighting, hazardous materials and emergency situations and
adopt an effective course of action; read, understand and explain technical materials; give
and follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working
relationships with others; prepare clear and concise reports.
This is an amendment to the specification for the class, FIRE CAPTAIN, which was
approved on November 15, 1991, amended August 25, 1993, September 27, 1996, and
September 11, 2015, and is to be substituted for that specification.
