Class Specifications for the Class:
COMPUTER SYSTEMS SUPPORT TECHNICIAN II
SR-15, BU-03
Duties Summary:
Monitors and controls electronic computers and peripheral equipment, such as the
central console and other control switches in the processing of a variety of statistical,
accounting, and other data; troubleshoots hardware and computer systems; and performs
other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class is distinguished by its responsibility for independently operating electronic
computers and peripheral equipment, such as the central console, and providing technical
support in response to computer system problems.
Examples of Duties: (The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily
descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does
not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical
assignment for the position).
•Prepares the computer system for operation by initializing and testing each
component of the system;
•Studies program operating instruction sheets to determine equipment set-ups;
•Sets necessary controls and ensures that necessary tape drives are provided, and
input/output tapes are available and mounted;
•Manipulates control switches on console panel to start and operate computer;
•Troubleshoots various hardware and computer systems;
•Types alternate commands into computer console according to pre-determined
instructions to correct error or failure and resume operations;
•Evaluates software applications being considered for procurement to determine and
define specifications based on reviews/analysis of county needs and/or specific
department requirements;
•Assembles and tests new program on the computer;

Prepares narrative analysis of program under test, describing the control setting
contents of program registers and storage and console message print out, etc., to
assist the programmer in "de-bugging" the program;
Records equipment utilization and production rates;
Assists in the training of computer operators and programmer trainees in the
operation of the computer console and the handling of the associated input/output
components of the computer system; and
Performs other related duties as required.
Knowledge of:
Principles and techniques of computer console operation; the components of an
electronic computer and their operation and functions; computer machine logic; basic
computer equipment set-ups for various production runs; program testing methods and
procedures.
Ability to:
Set up and operate an electronic computer and peripheral equipment; monitor the
central console to control and coordinate the functions of the computer system; initialize
and test components of the computer; read and understand computer control panel; read
and understand program operating instructions; identify indication error or machine stop
and take required corrective action; read and understand program operating instruction
sheets; lift boxes of computer paper, disk packs and computer equipment weighing up to 50
pounds.
This is an amendment to the specification for the class COMPUTER SYSTEMS
SUPPORT TECHNICIAN II, which was approved on November 10, 1980, as a COMPUTER
OPERATOR, retitled and amended on July 10, 2002, amended on October 19, 2007, and is
to be substituted for that specification.
