DAHILIG, MANAGING DIRECTOR News Release For Immediate Release: January 5, 2022 COUNTY OF KAUA‘I DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS TROY TANIGAWA, ACTING COUNTY ENGINEER (808) 241-4993 Jan. 5, 4 PM UPDATE: Menehune Road remains closed near Waimea Swinging Bridge; rockfall mitigation contractor to assess slope WAIMEA – Menehune Road remains closed near the Waimea Swinging Bridge until further notice due to a rockfall that occurred Tuesday morning. The Public Works Roads Division has scheduled a rockfall mitigation contractor to assess the cliffside hazard above Menehune Road. “We are assessing the slope and ensuring safe working conditions for emergency work personnel,” said Mayor Derek S. K. Kawakami. “Once deemed safe by engineers, our Roads Division crews will resume clearing the rocks and debris from the road. Mahalo to all our partners and to the residents for your continued cooperation and patience.” The Department of Public Works will also address the damaged swinging bridge supports that are also above the road. Utility partners have established temporary electricity and water in the area and are working to restore internet access and telecommunications service. Affected residents are urged to avoid the dangerous conditions. If you require assistance during work hours, you may call the Kaua‘i Emergency Management Agency at 808-241-1800. If after working hours, call Kaua‘i Police Dispatch at 808-241-1711. If this is an emergency and you require immediate assistance, call 911. There is no timeline yet on when the road will be reopened. Updates will be provided as information becomes available. ###
