Jan. 6 UPDATE: Menehune Road remains closed near Waimea Swinging Bridge;
rockfall mitigation work to begin tomorrow
WAIMEA – Menehune Road near the Waimea Swinging Bridge remains closed due to a rockfall
that occurred on Jan. 3. Rockfall mitigation assessment above the road began today, Jan. 6., with work
to start tomorrow, Jan. 7, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
“Following their assessment, contractors estimate that it may take at least three weeks to
remove all the rockfall hazards above Menehune Road. Crews will resume clearing work as soon as it is
deemed safe,” said Mayor Derek S. K. Kawakami. “We are thankful to our utility partners for restoring
power and water service by Tuesday night. Our telecommunications partners are continuing their work
to restore cable and internet service which are estimated to be completed Friday. Any resident needing
assistance during the continued road closure is urged to call the Kaua‘i Emergency Management Agency
for assistance at 808-241-1800.”
The Department of Public Works will also address the damaged swinging bridge supports that
are also above the road.
Affected residents are urged to avoid the dangerous conditions. If you require assistance during
work hours, you may call the Kaua‘i Emergency Management Agency at 808-241-1800. If after working
hours, call Kaua‘i Police Dispatch at 808-241-1711. If this is an emergency and you require immediate
assistance, call 911.
There is no timeline yet on when the road will be reopened. Updates will be provided as
information becomes available.
