Traffic crash closes portion of Kaumuali‘i Highway on Wednesday
KŌLOA – A portion of Kaumuali‘i Highway in Kōloa was closed in both directions for two hours
on Wednesday following a traffic collision.
According to a preliminary report, at approximately 3:13 p.m., a gold Nissan pickup operated by
an 80-year-old male resident was traveling eastbound on Kaumuali‘i Highway between mile markers 5 &
6 in the area commonly known as Knudsen Gap when it crossed the center line. The Nissan pickup then
collided head-on with a silver Mercedes-Benz Sprinter operated by a 37-year-old female of Kalāheo. The
crash caused the Mercedes-Benz to strike the guardrail on the westbound shoulder before it crossed the
center line and struck a Toyota pickup operated by a 65-year-old female of Kōloa.
The 80-year-old male operator of the Nissan pickup suffered critical injuries in the crash and was
transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital in critical condition and is awaiting transfer to Queen’s Medical
Center on O‘ahu. The 81-year-old female passenger of the Nissan was admitted to Wilcox Memorial
Hospital with what appears to be non-life-threatening injuries. Furthermore, the 65-year-old female
driver and 67-year-old male passenger of the Toyota pickup were also treated at Wilcox Memorial
Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Lastly, the 37-year-old female operator of the Mercedes was
also treated at Wilcox Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
