RAYBUCK, CHIEF (808) 241-1600 Statement from KPD regarding TSA incident LĪHU‘E – On Friday, April 8, around 6:45 am, Deputy Police Chief Stan Olsen was stopped by representatives of the Transportation Security Administration for passing a carry-on bag through a TSA checkpoint containing his department-issued firearm. Based on preliminary information, Deputy Chief Olsen carries a backpack to work with a safe- keeping pocket that holds his firearm. Deputy Chief Olsen failed to remove the firearm prior to checking in at the Līhuʿe Airport. TSA agents detected the firearm in his backpack as Deputy Chief Olsen passed through the security checkpoint. He was released to travel to the mainland for a personal matter. The firearm was held for safekeeping and released to KPD. No citation or arrest was made. TSA is the lead agency investigating the incident and we ask that media please direct further inquiries to its representatives. An internal KPD investigation will determine if department policies were violated related to this incident. ###
