DAHILIG, MANAGING DIRECTOR News Release For Immediate Release: February 14, 2023 COUNTY OF KAUA‘I KAUA‘I FIRE DEPARTMENT MICHAEL GIBSON, CHIEF (808) 241-4980 Firefighters respond to multiple incidents Monday LĪHU‘E – Kaua‘i Fire Department first responders responded to multiple incidents on Monday. The first incident involved two visitors from California who were rescued from Waimea Valley, while the second involved an ‘Ele‘ele resident rescued from heavy machinery in Moloa‘a. According to a preliminary report, KFD personnel received the first report at approximately 7:40 a.m. of two hikers in Waimea Valley unable to hike out due to high river levels. No injuries were reported. Personnel with the Waimea Fire Station, Rescue 3, and Air 1 responded to the incident. Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 arrived on the scene and located the two hikers near a landing zone by the Waimea River. The hikers were then dropped off at the Kukui Trailhead near Waimea Canyon Drive. First responders cleared the scene at approximately 10:20 a.m. According to a preliminary report, first responders received the second incident report shortly before 12:15 p.m. in Moloa‘a. One person was injured and was admitted to Wilcox Hospital in serious but stable condition. Personnel with the Hanalei and Līhu‘e fire stations, Rescue 3, the on-duty Battalion Chief, and American Medical Response responded to the incident. First responders arrived on the scene shortly after 12:30 p.m. and discovered a 53-year-old male, involved in a non-traffic crash on private property, under the care of AMR personnel. According to preliminary reports, the male sustained injuries after the crane he was secured to rolled down a hill. AMR personnel continued treatment of the crane operator while en route to Wilcox Medical Center in serious but stable condition. The scene was cleared shortly before 2 p.m. ###
