Input sought for Level 3 electric vehicle charger locations on Kaua‘i
LĪHU‘E – The County of Kaua‘i’s Office of Economic Development is seeking public input for Level
3 electric vehicle (EV) charger priority locations on Kaua‘i.
The County is in the early phases of a project to install several Level 3 electric vehicle chargers
on county property. This project is made possible by Congressionally Directed Spending earmarked by
Senator Brian Schatz and Senator Mazie Hirono.
“As we develop the project plan, we are conducting a survey to receive feedback from our
community on priority locations for Level 3 chargers,” said Christina Kaser, Energy Coordinator for the
Office of Economic Development. “In addition to feedback from our Department of Parks and
Recreation and Department of Public Works, these survey responses will be taken into consideration for
Level 3 charger locations and any future EV charger projects that may arise.”
The public is encouraged to participate in the online survey by May 18, at the following link:
https://forms.office.com/g/rbegJS2eNu.
Other criteria the County is considering for charger sites includes the potential for islandwide
coverage, proximity to existing transformers, other public EV chargers, potential planned areas for EV
chargers, security, and areas where people can do different activities while charging.
Currently on Kaua‘i, all public chargers are Level 2, and households typically charge their electric
vehicles with Level 1 or Level 2 chargers. Level 3 chargers, also referred to as DC Fast Chargers, are
significantly faster than Level 1 and 2 chargers, as they convert AC power to DC power (alternating
current to direct current) within the charger itself, sending DC power to the vehicle. Level 3 chargers
can charge a vehicle to 80% full in under an hour.
