DAHILIG, MANAGING DIRECTOR News Release For Immediate Release: May 1, 2023 COUNTY OF KAUA‘I DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS TROY TANIGAWA, COUNTY ENGINEER (808) 241-4993 Study of feasible technologies for Solid Waste Management available online LĪHU‘E – The County of Kaua‘i’s Solid Waste Division announces that a study completed by HDR Engineering Inc. (HDR), which assesses feasible technologies for long-term management of municipal solid waste on the island of Kaua‘i, is now available online. The study is posted and can be downloaded from the County’s website at www.kauai.gov/MSWtechstudy. The study was summarized in a presentation to the Kaua‘i County Council on April 19, 2023. HDR was contracted to issue a letter of interest to technology vendors both locally and throughout the nation, and screen responses to determine whether respondents can offer established, emerging, or undeveloped systems, and how the proposed systems rank against other performance criteria. In addition to the above, the study provides an overview of various waste management technologies, identifies how the technologies were screened, assesses the combined technologies, estimates technology costs, and provides conclusions and recommendations. As a next step, the study recommends a formal, cost-competitive, two-stage Request for Proposal (RFP) be issued to interested parties. “This study and its recommendations are important because Kaua‘i is quickly running out of landfill space and we must explore all options for managing waste,” said Allison Fraley, Environmental Services Manager. “An RFP for alternative technologies to landfill may result in a system that would minimize our need for landfill space in the future.” To request a hard copy of the report, please contact the County Solid Waste Division at 808-241- 4841. ###
