Class Specifications for the Class:
MECHANICAL REPAIR WORKER
BC-09, BU-01
Duties Summary:
Repairs, overhauls, tests, and maintains a variety of mechanical equipment and
tools; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class is distinguished by its responsibility repair, overhaul, test, and maintain a
variety of mechanical equipment and tools representative of the class.
Equipment representative of this class includes, but is not limited to:
Mechanical and electrical pumps, generators, compressors, hydraulic systems, power
saws, sod cutters, aerators, blowers, and other small construction equipment;
Small gasoline and diesel engines: power mowers, tractor mowers with attachments,
edgers, weed eaters, and utility vehicles.
Examples of Duties: (The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily
descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does
not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical
assignment for the position).
Repairs, overhauls, and services mechanical and electrical pumps, generators,
compressors, hydraulic systems, power saws, sod cutters, aerators, blowers, and
other small construction equipment;
Repairs, overhauls, and services small gasoline engines including power mowers,
tractor mowers and attachments, edgers, weed eaters, and utility vehicles;
Performs periodic inspections of mechanical and electrical equipment;
Diagnoses and repairs equipment by using testing equipment and takes appropriate
action to correct the problem;
Tests equipment after making repairs;
Maintains records of equipment maintenance and schedules and performs periodic
prevention maintenance;

Provides inspection services for the installation of mechanical and electrical
equipment or components thereof;
Makes recommendations and assists in the drafting of plans and specifications for
new or replacement equipment;
Sharpens, replaces and repairs cutting blades and knives;
Adjusts cutting blades and adjusts cutting heights on mowing equipment on a regular
basis;
May perform oxyacetylene and electrical welding;
Makes body and fender and other similar repairs;
May keep other types of records as required;
Oversees the routine maintenance work performed on equipment by operators of the
equipment and provides guidance and instructions when necessary;
May supervise the work of other trade helpers; and
Performs other related duties as required.
Knowledge of:
Practices, tools, equipment, and materials used in repairing mechanical and/or
electrical equipment; the functions and operating principles of a wide variety of mechanical
equipment, including electrical motors and gasoline engines; hazards and safety
precautions applicable to the work.
Ability to:
Recognize defects in mechanical and/or electrical equipment and take corrective
action; use and maintains hand and power tools used in the mechanical trades such as
wrenches, soldering irons, cutting and welding equipment, hammers, files, grinders, buffers
and drills; estimate materials, parts, and labor necessary to perform repairs; interpret and
work from sketches or schematic; operate motorized equipment; understand and follow oral
and written instructions; prepare simple reports and maintain records.

This is an amendment to the specification for the class, MECHANICAL REPAIR
WORKER, which was approved on December 17, 1973, amended on October 10, 1975,
August 11, 2004, and on May 4, 2022, and is to be substituted for that specification.

Minimum Qualification Specifications
for the Class:
MECHANICAL REPAIR WORKER
BC-09, BU-01
Training and Experience:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation
from high school; and
three (3) years of experience in repairing mechanical equipment representative of
the class.
Substitutions Allowed:
The following may be substituted for education:
A. Four (4) years of full-time general work experience may be substituted for a high
school diploma.
B. Successful completion of semester credits leading towards a degree or diploma from
an accredited community college, college or university, trades school, etc., may be
substituted for up to four (4) years of the education requirement (15 semester
credits = 6 months).

The following may be substituted for experience:
A. Successful completion of semester credits leading towards a degree or diploma in
Small Engine Mechanics Technology or a related field from an accredited community
college, trades school, may be substituted for up to four (4) years of the specialized
work experience requirement (15 semester credits = 6 months).

accredited community college, business, or technical school, may be substituted for
two (2) years of the specialized work experience requirement.

specialized work experience requirement.

D. ee in Small Engine Mechanics Technology or a related field
from an accredited college or university may be substituted for up to one (1) year of
the specialized work experience requirement.
If a degree is used to substitute for the education requirement, it may not be used
again towards the experience requirement. If work experience is used to substitute for
education, it may not be used again to meet the experience requirement. If the applicant
holds more than one degree, transcripts must be provided, and a thorough review will be
conducted by the DHR staff in order for more than one degree to be credited towards the
minimum qualification requirements. Additional degrees can be considered if obtained
independently through mutually exclusive classes from another degree being considered.
Substitutions will be used to the advantage of the applicant.
Quality of Experience:
Possession of the required number of years of experience will not in itself be
accepted as proof of qualification for a position. The applicant's overall experience must
have been of such scope and level of responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate that
he/she has the ability to perform the duties of the position for which he/she is being
considered.
Selective Certification:
Specialized knowledge, skills and abilities may be required to perform the duties of
some positions. For such positions, Selective Certification Requirements may be
established, and certification may be restricted to eligibles who possess the pertinent
experience and/or training required to perform the duties of the position.
Agencies requesting Selective Certification must show the connection between the
kind of training and/or experience on which they wish to base selective certification and the
duties of the position to be filled.
License Requirement:
Possession of the appropriate licenses or certificates as required of the position.
Test:
Applicants may be required to qualify on an appropriate examination.
Health and Physical Condition Requirements:
Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and
physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper to perform the essential
functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
