Class Specifications for the Class:
PARK MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR
FII-03, BU-02
Duties Summary:
Supervises the development, care, maintenance and beautification of county parks,
playgrounds, other recreational areas, and landscaped areas surrounding public buildings in
a geographical district; supervises the care and maintenance of equipment; makes
recommendations for improvements to existing buildings; supervises the operation and
maintenance of passenger type power mowers; and performs other duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class is distinguished by its responsibility for supervising the development, care,
maintenance, beautification and power mowing operations of county parks, playgrounds,
recreational areas, and landscaped areas surrounding public buildings in a geographical
district.
Examples of Duties: (The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily
descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does
not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical
assignment for the position).
• Plans and makes work assignments for the development, maintenance and
beautification of parks, playgrounds, and other recreational areas;
• Conducts periodic inspections to see that parks, recreational areas, facilities, and
landscaped areas are in proper condition;
• Determines schedules for the application of herbicides/pesticides and assures that
schedules are adhered to;
• Keeps records pertaining to work activities to include chemical application job
records showing hours worked, chemicals used, equipment used, areas treated,
weather conditions, etc.;
• Maintains tools, equipment, and materials;
• Makes recommendations for improving existing recreational areas and facilities;
• Prepares requisitions for materials, equipment, and supplies;

• Maintains complete and accurate inventory records of pesticides/herbicides;
• Makes estimates of time and labor costs;
• Reviews the work of subordinates; provides training on work methods and
techniques;
• Inspects buildings and other park facilities for necessary repairs and initiates work
orders as needed;
• Reviews, prepares, and submits reports;
• Maintains effective relationships with the public and provides general information as
requested;
• Listens to and resolves complaints;
• Initiates and enforces safety regulations;
• Attends division and special meetings as needed; and
• Performs other related duties as required.
Knowledge of:
Principles and practices of supervision; the general care of plants, flowers, shrubs,
trees, etc.; types of fertilizers and their use; the use of insecticides, fungicides, and
herbicides in the care of park grounds; operation and maintenance of grounds maintenance
equipment and tools.
Ability to:
Plan assignments, direct and review the work of others in the care, maintenance and
repair of park grounds, buildings, equipment, and other facilities; plan, layout and develop
landscaped areas; prepare cost estimates for materials, tools and equipment needed for
maintenance work; keep records, prepare reports, and maintain an effective working
relationship with subordinates and the general public.

Minimum Qualification Specifications
for the Class:
PARK MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR
FII-03, BU-02
Training and Experience:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation
from high school; and
• one (1) year and three (3) months of experience in the care, maintenance, and
beautification of parks, grounds, and landscaped areas; and
• two (2) years of supervisory experience.
Qualifying Supervisory Work Experience:
Work experience which includes planning, directing, assigning, and reviewing the
work of others; advising subordinates on difficult program areas; timing and scheduling
subordinate work; and training and developing new employees
Substitutions Allowed:
The following may be substituted for education:
A. Four (4) years of full-time general work experience may be substituted for a high
school diploma.
B. Successful completion of semester credits leading towards a degree or diploma from
an accredited community college, college or university, trades school, etc., may be
substituted up to four (4) years of the education requirement (15 semester credits =
6 months).
C. An Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree from an accredited community
college, college or university, trades school, etc., may be substituted for the
education requirement.
The following may be substituted for experience:
A. Successful completion of semester credits leading towards a degree or diploma in
horticulture, landscaping industry or a related field from an accredited community
college, trades school, may be substituted up to two (2) years of the specialized work
experience requirement (15 semester credits = 6 months).

B. An Associate’s degree in horticulture, landscaping industry or related field from an
accredited community college, business, or technical school, may be substituted for
two (2) years of the specialized work experience requirement.
C. A Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, landscaping industry or a related field from an
accredited college or university may be substituted for up four (4) years of the
specialized work experience requirement.
D. A Master’s or PhD degree in horticulture, landscaping industry or a related field from
an accredited college or university may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the
specialized work experience requirement.
If a degree is used to substitute for the education requirement, it may not be used
again towards the experience requirement. If work experience is used to substitute for
education, it may not be used again to meet the experience requirement. If the applicant
holds more than one degree, transcripts must be provided, and a thorough review will be
conducted by the human resources staff in order for more than one degree to be credited
towards the minimum qualification requirements. Additional degrees can be considered if
obtained independently through mutually exclusive classes from another degree being
considered. Substitutions will be used to the advantage of the applicant.
Quality of Experience:
Possession of the required number of years of experience will not in itself be
accepted as proof of qualification for a position. The applicant's overall experience must
have been of such scope and level of responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate that they
have the ability to perform the duties of the position for which they are being considered.
License Requirement:
Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license (Hawaii type 3 or equivalent)
and any other appropriate licenses or certificates as required of the position.
Selective Certification:
Specialized knowledge, skills and abilities may be required to perform the duties of
some positions. For such positions, Selective Certification Requirements may be
established, and certification may be restricted to eligibles who possess the pertinent
experience and/or training required to perform the duties of the position.
Departments/Agencies requesting Selective Certification must show the connection
between the kind of training and/or experience on which they wish to base selective
certification and the duties of the position to be filled.

Tests:
Applicants may be required to qualify on an appropriate examination.
Health and Physical Condition Requirements:
Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and
physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper to perform the essential
functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
