Class Specifications for the Class:
MAINTENANCE WORKER I
BC-09, BU-01
Duties Summary:
Performs skilled construction, maintenance and repair work of buildings, playground
facilities, residences, the equipment housed therein, and other structures requiring several
building trades including carpentry, painting, plumbing, masonry, electrical, and sheet metal
work; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class is distinguished by its ability to independently perform skilled work in several
trades such as carpentry, painting, plumbing, masonry, electrical, and sheet metal work
related to the construction, maintenance, and repair work of buildings, playground facilities,
residences, equipment housed therein, and other structures.
Examples of Duties: (The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily
descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does
not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical
assignment for the position).
• Checks buildings, equipment, and grounds to locate conditions indicating the need
for repair and maintenance work;
• Performs rough and finished carpentry and masonry work in the construction,
maintenance and repair of buildings and structures by selecting, marking, cutting
and installing lumber, laying out, cutting and fitting posts, sills, braces, joists, hip and
common rafters, girts, plates and other structural parts, patching roofs, cutting and
replacing glass, replacing screens, rehanging doors, replacing and repairing locks,
repairing and patching cement floors, walks, drives and foundation; installs and
removes shelves, partitions and cabinets;
• Repairs and constructs office furniture, doors, tables, and chairs;
• Repairs and paints doors, windows, furniture, and new construction;
• Mixes and matches paints and prepares and paints various surfaces;
• Cuts, threads, caulks, wipes, lays, and tests pipes and fittings;

• Installs plumbing fixtures; cleans and repairs sewer lines;
• Replaces electrical fuses, fixtures, drop cords and switches;
• Installs new electrical outlets;
• Replaces broken pipes;
• Cleans plugged drains;
• Replaces gaskets and washers;
• May assist in the installation and maintenance of sprinkler systems and wash basins;
• Services, lubricates, regulates, and makes minor repairs to such equipment as water
heaters, refrigeration and air conditioning units, electrical water coolers, motors, and
pumps;
• Fabricates articles from steel, sheet metal and pipes;
• Estimates costs, time and materials needed for construction repair and maintenance
work to be performed;
• Reports need for major repairs;
• Uses a variety of hand tools and some power equipment in the performance of work;
• May supervise others;
• May operate a motor vehicle in the transportation of materials and workers; and
• Performs other related duties as required.
Knowledge of:
Practices, tools, equipment, and materials used in the carpentry, painting, plumbing,
masonry, mechanical and electrical trades; plumbing and electrical equipment in buildings;
occupational hazards; safety practices and procedures.
Ability to:
Determine need for repairs involving a variety of building trades; use hand and power
tools utilized in a variety of building trades; read and interpret blueprints and sketches;
estimate time and materials needed to perform a job; do mechanical work; understand and
follow oral and written instructions; maintain good working relationships with others

This is an amendment to the specification for the class, MAINTENANCE WORKER I,
which was approved as MAINTENANCEMAN on February 11, 1974, re-titled and amended
on November 22, 1974, amended on March 31, 2005, February 22, 2019, December 8,
2021, and July 5, 2022, and is to be substituted for that specification.

Minimum Qualification Specifications
for the Class:
MAINTENANCE WORKER I
BC-09, BU-01
Training and Experience:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation
from high school; and
• three (3) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of buildings and
equipment which involved carpentry, painting, masonry, electrical and/or plumbing
work.
Substitutions Allowed:
The following may be substituted for education:
A. Four (4) years of full-time general work experience may be substituted for a high
school diploma.
B. Successful completion of semester credits leading towards a degree or diploma from
an accredited community college, college or university, trades school, etc., may be
substituted for up to four (4) years of the education requirement (15 semester
credits = 6 months).
C. An Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree from an accredited community
college, college or university, trades school, etc., may be substituted for the
education requirement.
The following may be substituted for experience:
A. Successful completion of semester credits leading towards a degree or diploma in
carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing or a related field from an accredited
community college, trades school, may be substituted for up to four (4) years of the
specialized work experience requirement (15 semester credits = 6 months).
B. An Associate’s degree in carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing or related field from
an accredited community college, business, or technical school, may be substituted
for two (2) years of the specialized work experience requirement.
If a degree is used to substitute for the education requirement, it may not be used
again towards the experience requirement. If work experience is used to substitute for
education, it may not be used again to meet the experience requirement. If the applicant

holds more than one degree, transcripts must be provided, and a thorough review will be
conducted by the human resources staff in order for more than one degree to be credited
towards the minimum qualification requirements. Additional degrees can be considered if
obtained independently through mutually exclusive classes from another degree being
considered. Substitutions will be used to the advantage of the applicant.
Quality of Experience:
Possession of the required number of years of experience will not in itself be
accepted as proof of qualification for a position. The applicant's overall experience must
have been of such scope and level of responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate that they
have the ability to perform the duties of the position for which they are being considered.
License Requirement:
Possession of the appropriate licenses or certificates as required of the position.
Selective Certification:
Specialized knowledge, skills and abilities may be required to perform the duties of
some positions. For such positions, Selective Certification Requirements may be
established, and certification may be restricted to eligibles who possess the pertinent
experience and/or training required to perform the duties of the position.
Departments/Agencies requesting Selective Certification must show the connection
between the kind of training and/or experience on which they wish to base selective
certification and the duties of the position to be filled.
Tests:
Applicants may be required to qualify on an appropriate examination.
Health and Physical Condition Requirements:
Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and
physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper to perform the essential
functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
