HomeMy WebLinkAbout8.010 MAINTENANCE WORKER II 20250711PART I DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN RESOURCES COUNTY OF KAUAI 8.010 Class Specifications for the Class: MAINTENANCE WORKER II WS-09, BU-01 Duties Summary: Plans, supervises, and participates in skilled construction, maintenance and repair work of buildings, playground facilities, residences, the equipment housed therein and other structures requiring several building trades such as carpentry, painting, plumbing, masonry, electrical, and sheet metal work; and performs other related duties as required. Distinguishing Characteristics: This class is distinguished by its ability to supervise and independently perform skilled work in several trades such as carpentry, painting, plumbing, masonry, electrical, and sheet metal work related to the construction, maintenance, and repair work of buildings, playground facilities, residences, equipment housed therein, and other structures. Examples of Duties: (The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position). • Checks and inspects buildings, structures, equipment, and facilities to determine maintenance and construction needs; • Plans, lays out work, prepares material lists and supervises and participates in the construction, maintenance and repair work of buildings and structures by selecting, marking, cutting, and installing lumber, cutting, and fitting posts, sills, braces, joists, hip, and common rafters, girts, plates and other structural parts; • Supervises and participates in the repairing, replacing, installing or construction of floors, windows, partitions, doors, locks, roofs, fences, gates, walks, driveways, foundations, sprinkler systems, gaskets, washers, electrical and plumbing fixtures, cabinets, shelves, forms for concrete, etc.; • Supervises and participates in the servicing, lubricating, regulating and minor repairing of such equipment as water heaters, refrigeration and air-conditioning units, electrical water coolers, motor, and pumps, etc.; • Supervises and participates in the mixing and matching of paints and the painting of doors, walls, floors, and other structures; PART I MAINTENANCE WORKER II 2 8.010 • Supervises and participates in the fabrication of articles from steel, sheet metal and pipes; • Supervises and participates in the lay out, assembling and maintenance of set-up equipment for public events, such as riser scaffoldings, chairs, stages, booths, theater equipment, etc.; • May supervise and participate in the construction of special set-ups; • May operate a vehicle in the transportation of materials and workers; and • Performs other related duties as required. Knowledge of: Practices, tools, equipment, and materials used in the carpentry, painting, plumbing, masonry, mechanical and electrical trades; plumbing and electrical equipment in buildings; occupational hazards; safety practices and procedures. Ability to: Plan, lay out, assign, and review work of subordinates; determine need for repairs involving a variety of building trades; use hand and power tools utilized in a variety of buildings trades; read and interpret blueprints and sketches; estimate time and materials needed to perform a job; understand and follow oral and written instructions; maintain good working relationships with others. This is an amendment to the specification for the class MAINTENANCE WORKER II, which was approved as MAINTENANCE WORKING FOREMAN on January 28, 1974, re-titled and amended on November 22, 1974, amended on March 31, 2005, February 22, 2019, December 8, 2021, and July 5, 2022, and is to be substituted for that specification. ANDERSON Director of Human Resources Jill Niitani (Jul 11, 2025 13:56 HST) PART II DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN RESOURCES COUNTY OF KAUAI 8.010 Minimum Qualification Specifications for the Class: MAINTENANCE WORKER II WS-09, BU-01 Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school; and • four (4) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment which involved carpentry, painting, masonry, electrical and/or plumbing work. Substitutions Allowed: The following may be substituted for education: A. Four (4) years of full-time general work experience may be substituted for a high school diploma. B. Successful completion of semester credits leading towards a degree or diploma from an accredited community college, college or university, trades school, etc., may be substituted up to four (4) years of the education requirement (15 semester credits = 6 months). C. An Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree from an accredited community college, college or university, trades school, etc., may be substituted for the education requirement. The following may be substituted for experience: A. Successful completion of semester credits leading towards a degree or diploma in carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing or a related field from an accredited community college, technical or trades school may be substituted up to two (2) years of the work experience requirement (15 semester credits = 6 months). B. An Associate’s degree in carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing or a related field from an accredited community college, technical or trades school may be substituted for up to two (2) years of the work experience requirement. PART II MAINTENANCE WORKER II 2 8.010 If a degree is used to substitute for the education requirement, it may not be used again towards the experience requirement. If work experience is used to substitute for education, it may not be used again to meet the experience requirement. If the applicant holds more than one degree, transcripts must be provided, and a thorough review will be conducted by the human Resources staff in order for more than one degree to be credited towards the minimum qualification requirements. Additional degrees can be considered if obtained independently through mutually exclusive classes from another degree being considered. Substitutions will be used to the advantage of the applicant. Quality of Experience: Possession of the required number of years of experience will not in itself be accepted as proof of qualification for a position. The applicant's overall experience must have been of such scope and level of responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate that they have the ability to perform the duties of the position for which they are being considered. License Requirement: Possession of the appropriate licenses or certificates as required of the position. Selective Certification: Specialized knowledge, skills and abilities may be required to perform the duties of some positions. For such positions, Selective Certification Requirements may be established, and certification may be restricted to eligibles who possess the pertinent experience and/or training required to perform the duties of the position. Agencies requesting Selective Certification must show the connection between the kind of training and/or experience on which they wish to base selective certification and the duties of the position to be filled. Tests: Applicants may be required to qualify on an appropriate examination. Health and Physical Condition Requirements: Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
